How to Choose the Right Light

Lighting your home is key to creating the right ambience, consider the lighting locations and the kind of mood you want to create within your home. Discover the Laura James guide to choosing the right lights for your home.

Light Location

Every room in the home has a light, but often one light is not always enough. The lighting in the bedroom should be warm and calming allowing you to be able to relax. Bedrooms may have ceiling lights or wall lights as well as bedside table lamps for reading.

Alternatively, opt for rechargeable lamps that are portable so you can move them around as and when you want to. Our Brockhill rechargeable table lamps feature a stylish rounded design and need 4 hours charge to last up to 2.5 hours on full brightness and up to 12 hours on a low brightness setting.

Most rooms in your home will have ceiling lighting, and choosing the right pendent light fitting will depend on the size of the room. Consider the height of the ceiling and how long you want the pendant drop to be, for instance in a dining room you may want the drop to be a little longer, so it hangs over the dining table offering ample lighting for dining and chatting. In other rooms, use the ceiling pendant to create a focal point. Choosing the correct ceiling light can be tricky, if it hangs too low people could walk into it and if it’s too high it could look too small.

Alternatively, the Bari cotton string pendant light is ideal for a neutral bedroom or living space  offering texture in an off-white hue.

Larger rooms in your home often need multiple lighting options to break up the space. This also allows you to create the right ambience for the room. The living room is usually one of the biggest interior spaces in our homes and although there will be either a main light or wall lights, these are not usually the lights you want on during the evenings. Create soft and warm lighting with floor lamps like the Chattendon lamp finished in neutral boucle for a textured and contemporary look.

Table lamps are ideal for elevating sideboards, side tables and consoles. Pop them on some stacked books or next to some artwork, to create a stylish look.

We need lighting for various reasons, for instance bright pendant lights over a kitchen island or counter are designed to allow us to see clearly if we are cleaning, cooking or preparing food. However, the lighting in the dining room or dining area can be a bit dimmer but still bright enough to see what we are eating.

Elland 20cm Triple Glass Pendant Lights - Chrome - Laura JamesFor the living room, lighting should be warm and ambient to create a relaxing mood for watching TV or a movie. Whereas our home office needs ideally plenty of natural light to be able to work effectively. If you don’t have natural light, then try a daylight lamp. Using a bright office desk lamp for working in the evening is essential to be able to see clearly.

This is why bathroom ceiling lights are bright and bathroom mirrors tend to be back lit, like our Kimbridge LED bathroom mirror, offering ample bright lighting.
